Where to start
The five questions an aquarium starts from.
Setting up a first aquarium
Start with volume and location: the more water, the steadier the parameters. Then a cabinet rated for the filled tank, a filter, lighting and substrate. For the first weeks the tank runs without fish, until the biology in the filter settles.
Water preparation
Tap water is treated with a conditioner before filling. For soft-water fish, shrimp and marine tanks the water is made on reverse osmosis and salted back to the parameters you need.
Improving filtration
When the water clouds or the parameters swing, the cause is usually filter volume and media rather than pump power. Look at turnover against tank volume, and at what the baskets are filled with.
Planted aquarium
Plants need a nutrient substrate, light of the right spectrum and duration, CO2 and regular fertilizing. Without one of the four, the other three do not work.
Marine aquarium
A marine start begins with osmosis water and salt, live rock and flow. Corals need a different light spectrum, and parameter stability matters more here than in freshwater.
