Hamsters

A popular first pet, mostly active at night.

Hamsters live 2–3 years and are active at dusk and night. Syrian hamsters must be housed alone — they're territorial — while dwarf hamsters can sometimes be paired if introduced correctly. They need a cage with a running wheel, digging bedding, grain-based food, and a hideaway for sleeping.
